Attention, attention! I guess I’ve done a crappy job at self-promotion— but guess what?! I’m part of a photography group show opening tomorrow (today if you’re reading this in the morning) night at Mishka NYC.

I’m way more excited then you’ll ever really know, even though I haven’t shoved it down everyone’s throat. If you’re in NY, stop by, right of the J train on Marcy Avenue. Yes, Brooklyn, don’t be scared. It doesn’t bite too hard.

I have two photographs on display. One an edition of 2, and the other an edition of 5. I’ll post the photos when the show’s up along with a link to purchase prints if you’re interested. Which I hope you are. I’m going to Argentina in July and I need monies! But more than anything, I’m happy with my photographs and they deserve great homes and viewing eyes.

I’ve stopped referring to “designer toys” as toys. The word is harmful to the future of the movement and I think it’s part of the cause for it’s stagnant state. That’s just me though. I haven’t really been part of this art movement for a while, because I became engulfed with street art and documenting, so my priorities shifted. This didn’t mean I forgot about these limited sculptures, it just meant I was done with the politics and the saturation of a market (some argue the same about street art though, but that’s besides the point). I have however, kept a distant watch. Here and there several pieces have piqued my interest, some shows have made me look through their inventory but I still havent purchased anything in a while.

The reason this comes up at all. Although I haven’t been active in this movement, I still receive emails from folks regarding events, shows, releases and more recently— kickstarter projects. I’m a HUGE fan of Kickstarter, it’s helping people make their dreams come true to some degree or other. When at one point several projects could never reach fruition, this makes it a possibility. But here’s the thing…

If you’re seeking funding for a project, you really need to ask yourself: what makes it different then what’s on the market? Is there anything like it already out there? If so, what makes mine better? And you, YOU have to be your most HONEST critic about it. I think some people are requesting funding with a veil on their eyes preventing them from accepting that their product simply isn’t different from other things out there.

On a personal pet-peeve and slightly unrelated note— if you’re going to turn to kickstarter to fund your project; the least you can do is help someone else with their own project. It urks me when you use the community and resources, but don’t pay it forward. I myself am broke half the time, but I chip in where I can, think about doing the same.

Growing up, my mother used to blast Leo Dan, Leonardo Favio, Los Terricolas, the Beatles and so many other artists that I hated. I hated her pumping up the volume and singing to her heart’s content; but now (and I’ve shared this tidbit before)— I ache to find the music of yesteryear. I’m constantly forcing my brain to scramble through memories when she’d tell me who was singing so I can download their music and sway to it.

The music not only makes me feel closer to her, but these days, I’m mustering over their lyrics. She mostly blasted ballads. Men and women poured their finest words of love and the loss of it/joys of being consumed by it. They’re helping me cope, they’re helping me be stronger than before.

Leo Dan in particular is up there. In some ways, his vocals make me want to slow dance with my latest goodbye. Leo Dan makes me coo his words, and wish I was holding my lost love while whispering english translations. Makes me wish I’d be back in my ballerina costume being a free spirit with the person that was never quite mine. But in healthier ways, Leo Dan makes me realize I just need to pour all the hurt into the creative endeavors and let the heart mend itself.

Though I’ve had many unsuccessful attempts to end things with this dear soul, this time around, the loneliness of being able to share our joys has made me too exhausted to continue fighting for a future. I am more relieved than hurt, though VERY hurt nonetheless.
