About the dream…
I’m not much for superstition, and ghosts and goblins and all the other jazz that keeps people awake at night. There are times, however, where the imagery affects my core and I can’t help but think about what’s been said.
Being of Mexican descent, there are many folk stories and old-wives tales that have been shared with me. One of these is on the subject of dreams. I was told, that if a tooth fell out in your dreams, it means someone in your life is going to die.
Last night’s snippet of REM sleep, led me into what I’m sure was a 4 minute dream that felt like a lifetime. I’m working for Alex (of Mighty Tanaka), and we’re no longer in the New York that we’re in now. Whatever time it is, I know it’s in the future— but the space we find ourselves in is a gothic scenery of endlessly high ceilings and ornate decor, dark hallways and a general brooding aura about the place. I’m his assistant, and he’s conducting business, not art related business— but something else. Something happens, and I fuck up. I fuck up a deal really bad.
As the business partners are about to rat me out, I run to the bathroom to hide maybe? I’m not quite sure. When I get there though, my gums begin to ache. I inspect them in the mirror and find, that they’re incredibly tender and my gums are bleeding. Not the slight gush of blood that rushes when you’re flossing and have been just a little too rough, but my mouth is soaked in blood. And my gums become mush, and then it happens! First my left canine tooth comes out so effortlessly. And my gums, they ache even more, and I check my two front incisors and the slightest touch wiggles them. I grab them, and don’t even pull, and off they go too.
Alex is banging on the door, pissed the fuck off with the deal that’s just gone sour. I open the door and I beg him to help me. The look on his face tells me the scene is more horrific than I think, and in that moment I drop to the floor. He yells for someone to get help, and I’m left with a bird’s eye view of my body on the ground, being lifted by Alex and my lifeless eyes.
The first thing I thought about when snapping myself awake— three teeth fell out. Will there be loss in my near future?
