N Word with Robot…
Why hadn’t I spotted this project when it was active?!! New South Books, the publishing company that was (or is continuing to) discussing reprinting The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with the N* word removed and replacing it with the word, slavery, was a hot topic during my publishing class.
Many people in class believed it was an important book to discuss in class and that therefore, the removal would make it more comfortable to discuss the issues that conflicted and continue to conflict our nation regarding race and equality. Some people also had the opinion, that this book simply was too mature for middle school/high school students and that they’d giggle whenever the word was encountered. These people clearly are comparing their own feelings and reaction to the “uncomfortable word.” Having worked with middle school and high school students, I can attest to them being able to handle this kind of material perfectly fine when a confident teacher/instructor facilitates proper discussion.
In addition to the commentary— this subject matter should be uncomfortable, we oppressed an entire race— the “we” in this sentence by the way refers to America. This isn’t supposed to be a comfortable matter, it’s supposed to be something that teaches us not to repeat embarrassing and atrocious acts in the belief of superiority. This kickstarter project, highlights the stupidity of replacing the “N-word” with anything but what it should be. Good job!
